Lone Female Travellers – Tips on How to Stay Safe

It can be daunting to travel alone as a woman, especially in parts of the world where women are viewed and treated very differently from what you are used to. Fear for personal safety, fear of getting mugged or robbed and fear of getting attacked are all legitimate worries for a solo female traveller. But you can have a lot of control over keeping yourself  safe with a little forward planning, a dash of common sense, and a few little tips and tricks up your sleeve. Then you can be free to enjoy yourself and have one of the most liberating and confidence boosting experiences of your life!

Here are some of the things I did and found useful on my solo travels. I hope they help.

1. Arrange your travel plans so that you arrive early in the day at your destinations. This way, even if you haven’t pre-booked accommodation, you have plenty of time and daylight to make the arrangements you need. It also means you don’t get stuck somewhere at night with nowhere to stay, or having to stay somewhere that you are not totally comfortable.

2. Keep spare money in different places – some in your personal bag, some in your main rucksack, some on your person. At least this way if your bag gets snatched you know you have backup. It’s also a great surprise when you find some secret money stashed somewhere months later after forgetting all about it!

3. Dress Conservatively. Travelling is not the time to show off your latest cute top. Save it for when you get to where you’re going and you know it’s appropriate. You can save yourself a lot of staring, unwanted attention, gropes or worse if you just cover up. In India, for instance, I had a few tunics and trousers made up for very little money, and kept them as my travelling clothes. I never had any significant hassle from men. Bear in mind that local women will prefer it if you cover up too, and they are likely to be a lot more friendly and helpful if you dress appropriately.

Stay Fit Travel Tips

I have been traveling on and off for the past two weeks. This week marks the last of our summer vacations and trips to visit family. I know first hand how being away from home can take a toll on your fitness regimen. Vacations are notorious for quickly packing on the pounds this summer. From road trips, to camping, to amusement parks, to visiting with family – each destination is filled with tempting food and drink as well as a change in our exercise routine. I have received several questions regarding the best plan to have in place to prevent a setback during the summer travel season.

Begin by considering if you would like to go into Maintenance Mode – just maintain your progress – or Results Mode – KEEP making progress. This will determine your plan of action as well as the level of commitment to your vacation eating and exercise plan.

Stay Fit Tip 1: Remember WHY you are going on Vacation. If the goal is to feel refreshed after you return, why abandon all of your healthy habits only to return feeling like you need to be a “slave” to your workouts in order to make up for all the weight you gained. No amount of eating or drinking is worth the effort it will take to remove those excess pounds. Make good choices while you are away and you will be more prepared to overcome any travel fatigue, so you return to your normal routine feeling rejuvenated!

Stay Fit Tip 2: Prevention is KEY In the long run, prevention is always better than the cure.

If you already know ahead of time that you will be practicing in some overindulgence, ,vamp up your exercise and eating habits NOW.The best part about this type of approach is that you have a deadline. This will help keep you motivated to stick as closely as you can to your FYM plan. If you have the time, begin 2 to 4 weeks prior to leaving. This gives you the opportunity to lose 4 to 8 pounds of fat – all before you leave! Allowing you more flexibility while you are away.

Stay Safe Travel Tips For Women Traveling Solo

A trip of safe travel is of utmost importance when traveling. When you are traveling solo you have lots of freedom but you are exposed to untrustworthy individuals that could deter you from a safe travel experience.  By following a few tips you can help ensure that you will have a trip of safe travel.

Safe Travel Tip for Women Traveling Solo #1

Avoid exchanging large sums of money in public places.  It’s actually better to use less cash and more credit cards to help make sure you have a trip of safe travel.

Safe Travel Tip for Women Traveling Solo #2

Before getting into a taxi, make sure you note its license plate number.  After you are inside make a call (or pretend to be calling) to a friend giving them the taxi license plate number and let them know you are on your way to meeting with them.  Make sure the taxi driver hears this conversation.

Safe Travel Tip for Women Traveling Solo #3

Always have a phone with you when traveling solo.  You want to be able to call for help at any given moment if it is needed.  “Check in” with a friend at home frequently to let them know you are having a safe travel experience and to let them know what you are doing and where you are.

Safe Travel Tip for Women Traveling Solo #4

Never open your hotel room door to a stranger or allow a stranger in your room.  If you get a knock on the door and the person says they are maintenance or any other type of hotel staff, call the front desk to verify that the person was indeed sent to your room.  Don’t take the stairs in a hotel.

Safe Travel Tip for Women Traveling Solo #5

Hide valuables in your feminine items such as your bra.  The ideal kind of bra for hiding money is the kind that has removable pads.  Another feminine hiding spot is a partially full tampon box.  It’s unlikely that someone will want to look inside that.

Safe Travel Tip for Women Traveling Solo #6

Don’t “appear” to be a single person traveling solo.  Wear a gold band on your left hand.  Put a jacket on an empty seat beside you to give the appearance you have a companion with you.  This will help ensure a trip of safe travel.
