The Canary Islands are one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe.  As these seven islands are all owned by Spain and attract close to ten million visitors every year.  Drawn by great weather and wonderful beaches – as well as plenty of high quality accommodation options.

The third largest island, Lanzarote, sits at the eastern end of the archipelago, close to the south west coast of Morocco.  And is the driest and most arid of all of these islands.  Thanks to the fact that precipitation here is very low as there are few mountains or peaks taller than 600 metres.  Although Lanzarote is home to over 300 volcanoes, most of which were created by major eruptions some 250 years ago.

Tourism here is concentrated in three main resorts – the largest of which is Puerto del Carmen.  Which is situated close to the airport at Arrecife and which is divided into two main zones; The New Town, which runs parallel with the main beaches and the Old Town which has grown up around the harbour area.  From where local fishermen used to launch their boats.

There are a lot of apartments and villas in Puerto del Carmen – especially in the New Town area.  As the Old Town is more residential in character.  And this type of self catering accommodation has become very popular as the internet now enables tourists to book their ideal property direct online with the owners.  And despite Puerto del Carmen’s size and scale there are only two main hotels servicing the resort.
