It’s a great experience when preparing for an expedition and one of the things I always look forward to is when preparing my SLR camera backpack for the trip. For every avid photographer, this activity actually does not have any set in stone rules as it’s more to each individual’s preference..although in the end, we still try to get the right mix of weight and what gears are really important. Have a look below on some ideas that I’d like to share which might prove to have some practicality for you as well.

Even though your digital cameras are already fitted with their own batteries the moment you purchased them, it’s always best to also have a few extra batteries in your SLR camera backpack. Why is this? Well, depending on how long and the number of images you’ll be snapping in let’s say a day, it’s quite generally known that your batteries won’t run out of power that soon. For me, the reason to have extra batteries are for those moments we are inclined to forget recharging them before using them for the next photo shoot.

Recharger – It would be quite nonsensical to have all the batteries in our SLR camera backpack but no recharger wouldn’t it?

If you’re going to be trekking overseas to another country, it’s best to do some probing beforehand on the types of power sources being used. Each country may use different levels of power source or even different nature of connections, which is why having a power adapter as part of your equipment in the SLR camera backpack equally valuable.

When traveling with your camera and SLR camera backpack in tow, do expect encountering a dirty camera. Because of this, the one item you must already have in hand are some cleaning gear, which can either be a simple lens cloth for cleaning off the outside of the camera and also a bulb blower.

Filters are an essential part of any photographer’s equipment and this also holds true when preparing your SLR camera backpack for traveling as they help extensively in your overall photo shoots.

Start with the end in mind

It’s easy to go buy the first thing that looks good to you. Granted, there are quite a few camera backpacks that are quite the eye candy. I hope it’s not unbecoming if I recommend that you must think of its final purpose first. Are you looking to get a backpack to look good or consider the consequences and buy one that will be able to carry all your photo equipment and won’t feel like the burden of the whole world on your shoulders no matter what’s inside?

The biggest brands aren’t always the best to suit your needs. For, us, the typical photographers tho, they do more than a decent job and sometimes they even have pleasant surprises in stock for us. Of course, I’m talking about Tamrac, Lowepro, Kata and Crumpler. Not necessarily in that order. And if I may say so myself Crumpler doesn’t get the respect it deserves in the US, but maybe that’s just me.

We have to acknowledge of course the fact there are other companies that make larger camera backpacks specific for certain needs, but since this lesson is an introduction we’ll leave it at that.

Major brands description

generally Tamrac and Lowepro offer the same level of quality and practicality. Classical designed everything, slr camera bags, camera backpacks and everything in between plus accessories. I don’t mean that as a bad thing necessarily, they do have high quality products that can withstand a lot of abuse. The Tamrac and Lowepro backpacks are very spacious and especially Tamrac’s products are usually a bit bulky for my preferences. If I’m to pick one thing not like at them is definitely the old school designs, even the new ones tend to look old already, maybe because of the colors they choose.

A totally different game can be seen in Kata’s and Crumpler’s backyard. Kata excels in creating a sci-fi model with classical colors, meanwhile Crumpler puts out some trendy designs with fresh colors. Kata backpacks seem to be afraid of too many vertical or horizontal zippers, and as a result the sci-fi design. Both Kata and Crumpler camera backpacks will make you stand out in a crowd. Carrying the camera and its accessories is much easier with the right carrying bag. Most people are tempted to buy a bag specifically designed for their camera. These bags are easier to use and have the right compartments for the various accessories but they have a big drawback: they can draw the attention of a thief who is lurking for tourists. It is better to use a normal bag such as a backpack that does not look new or like a bag that holds an expensive camera.

Digital cameras have many accessories some are optional and some are not. It is a good idea to make a checklist and use it when packing for a vacation.
