Walking tours Paris France – 2. Ile de St Louis

Walk from the Ile de la Cite (after visiting the famous Paris Notre Dame) to the adjacent island of Ile de St Louis via the Pont St Louis – what a contrast – on Ile de St Louis the pace of life changes, the tourist masses disappear, the elegant buildings line the streets, peace and quiet descends especially at the weekends, so just stroll around soaking up the atmosphere. It is surrounded by the River Seine and you can see excellent shots of the river on this website www.travelguide.tv/paris/tours.

Have a glass of wine at one of the tiny cafes, visit some of the wonderful delicatessen shops, smell the fresh bread in the boulangeries, buy an icecream on Rue St Louis, explore some of the wine shops, indulge in a piece of true French cheese, and know you are in the heart of Paris. This island is in the Paris River Seine, alongside the more famous island, Ile de la Cite, famous for the Notre Dame Cathedral, Palais de Justice, etc. For more videos of Paris, www.travelguide.tv has a spelendid set of tourist videos.

On Ile de St Louis, you can visit the Museum of Adam Mickiewicz (the Polish poet who lived in Paris for many years). The museum is open only on Thursdays from 2pm to 6pm and you can arrange a guided tour by contacting the Paris Museum in advance – telephone (1) 43 54 35 61.

The church on the island, St Louis en l’Ile, dates from the 17th Century and look out for the great iron clock at the entrance. The outside is a little unimpressive but inside it is glorious. Inside you’ll see a statue of St Louis and he is holding a Crusader’s sword. St Louis gave his name to St Louis in Missouri USA. The church is Baroque in style and is richly decorated. On occasions the church is closed to visitors – usually when the choir is practicing. However, watch out for the concert programme – there are wonderful performances mainly in the summer months during the Festival Musique en l’Ile.

Another wonderful sight on this small island is the Hotel de Luzun. It is on Quai d’Anjou but unfortunately unless part of a private tour you can’t see the interior. One of its famous features though is the drainpipes – yes the pipes to guide the rain from the roof, etc and you can enjoy these as you stroll past – look out for the fish feature on some of them.

Once you have “done” the Ile de la Cite and Ile St Louis, the heart of Paris France, you are ready to visit the rest of Paris. Check out the Paris France Video website to see the attractions of Paris. Here you can also use the interactive map of Paris, check the weather and immerse yourself in the wonders of this great city.

Just like you have plenty of options when deciding your perfect dream vacation you also have plenty of choices with regards to selecting a <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.vlt.com.au/”>travel agency</a> . These agencies help in making a perfect vacation for you and your family.

Firstly you should decide whether you want to go for an online based travel agency or a locally based agency that will help you with all your travel needs. Choosing an online travel consultant you can avail their services 24/ 7 at any time of the day. You can book your travel tickets at your convenience. You can retrieve any travel information that you may require any time you place your demands.

A local travel agency works quiet differently. But you can develop a good relationship with your travel agent that will also help you in any future travel. Since you are personally interacting with them they will keep in mind your travel needs and your desires for future purposes too. But be assured that whichever option you go for it will surely make you’re planning much easier. The various advantages of taking the help of these agencies are.

Information’s: These travel agencies have huge experiences and knowledge with regards to travel. They also have good connections with the hospitality industries so they are able to provide various kinds of information’s regarding the peak seasons, cheap fares, budget hotels, <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.vlt.com.au/”>group travel</a> and many other related topics.
Cheap Fares: The various travel consultants as well as the online agents are able to fetch the best possible deals for you through their source of contacts. These agents generally purchase air line tickets in bulks so they are able to get great discounts on their transactions. This makes them offer tickets at affordable prices.
Group Discounts: If you are planning to travel along with your other friends to your favorite beach resort or taking your entire family to experience the safari then your agent might offer you special discounts as you are traveling in a group.
Various kinds of perks: Sometimes your agents can also offer you with special perks for hiring their services in planning for your vacation. Take for example if your friends are planning to visit Las Vegas then your agent may offer you free concert or show tickets. They could also offer you with some slot chips to be used in the machines.
Specialization: The travel agents could specialize in certain types of travel and could also specialize in catering to specific age groups or professionals. Some may have their expertise in the country of Africa while others may only be experienced in dealing with the European countries. Some travel agents may only cater to the students or the retirees.

Talk to your agent about tour packages too. Package tours are designed practically and are quiet affordable too. Your airline tickets and your hotel reservations are offered as a complete package and the agents are able to offer great deals on them

There is nothing better for a freedom lover than backpacking. It is the ultimate dream being outside and at one with nature, there is so much to take in – walking about on the rough terrain, the unpredictable weather and also coming across bugs. The experienced backpacker will have left nothing to chance, by well prepared for just about everything as one slip up can make the simplest trip a dangerous one at that. This doesn’t mean that they are afraid of getting hurt, but the thought of not being able to get about in nature to enjoy it and the views it offers. Special attention is paid to all aspects of the type of gear that they need to bring for their trip.

An essential part of the gear that a backpacker needs to consider bringing is a good sleeping bag. An excellent sleeping bag must be ideal for the backpacker to carry. It should be lightweight, easy enough to stow away and carry, to ensure a good night’s sleep. What determines this will take some thought and research, looking at one’s preferences, so that it’s relatively easy to decide on the right choice of bag.

A person should look at the itinerary for their backpacking to consider what type of sleeping bag they will require. The area they are travelling to needs to be looked at – will it have warm or cool temperatures? What is the temperature going to be like once the sun has gone down? Will it be a rainy environment or is it likely to have some humidity? A sleeping bag has more insulating quantities when it gets wet if it is insulated with synthetic material compared with natural material, or bags that are filled with down, so that is important to think about if you are to stay warm. Shell linings that are made of nylon are ideal to cope with humid environments as they are quite durable, but for cold and windy environments they do not as well for this type of weather. Microfibre is a material that is suitable for resistance to water and wind, though you will find them more expensive and heavier to carry in comparison with other materials. A bag that has less material will be lighter to carry and easier to stow into a backpack. It is always best to travel light when you are backpacking and have to take everything with you.

The concept of a sleeping bag that will fit everyone sounds good in theory, but we all have different tastes in sleeping bag. People all have different metabolisms some manage to keep ‘warm’ as they sleep at night; others require some extra protection even if the climate is quite warm. There are guidelines as to the temperature of a sleeping bag when it is subjected to differing climates and what temperatures would still make them comfortable. A person will also need to consider whether they require a hood for added warmth for their head, or draft tubes that will allow the body heat to vent.

Once you have found the correct sleeping bag for yourself, think about buying a sleeping liner which minimises the need to wash the whole of the sleeping back, and will also help to cut down on its wearability. By choosing a good quality bag, the backpacker, with care, will be able to get a lot of use over the years – the perfect investment.

On Paris’ beautiful Ile de la Cité, nestled in the confines of the Palais de Justice complex and protected from the river Seine by the mighty and foreboding one-time prison of Marie Antoinette, the Conciergerie, lies the sublime church Sainte-Chapelle, a must-see for anyone visiting Paris for the first time, and for those of us who return to it each time we return to Paris, as a kind of sacred pilgrimage.

Sainte-Chapelle is a 13th century (consecrated 1248) structure begun under the auspices Louis IX, who would later become Saint Louis, to house various religious relics of the Passion of Christ, such as Jesus’ Crown of Thorns.

The first time I visited I purchased a combination discount ticket which also allowed me entrance to the Conciergerie. Before I was allowed to enter Sainte-Chapelle, my backpack was searched thoroughly, and this was long before 9/11. It was a rather warm early afternoon, and my Sainte-Chapelle experience was getting off to a poor start standing there in the sun.

I was finally let into the lower chapel, which was used by the parish, the commoner. This was all well and good, very . . . and very French, with lots of red, blue and gold around, and complex vaulted ceilings held up by ornate pillars, all very beautiful; still there had to be more to this place.

I mounted the stairs. These led to the upper chapel reserved for the French royalty of centuries before.

Having read about Sainte-Chapelle in several guide books, I had the sense that I knew fairly well what to expect. But when I entered the upper chapel, nothing had prepared me for what I saw there. On three sides soared spectacular stained glass looking more beautiful than any architectural feature I had ever seen in my relatively broad travels; and the magnificent rose window was behind me; above was a star-studded vaulted ceiling. The sight may leave you speechless, and you might just wish to assume the fetal position and die on the spot, because <B>now you have seen everything.</B>

I took a page from Rick Steves’ travel guidebook and stood near the stairs to watch the reactions of first-time visitors. Many of them stood there, their mouths agape in awe at the place. Do go and see it for yourself!

Metro: Cité. (There are other Metro choices, but I feel Cité gives you the most interesting stroll.)
